Circular modes for flat beams in the LHC

Abstract: Typically x=y optical coupling is considered as unwanted and thus suppressed; particular exclusions are electron and ionization coolers. Could some special coupled modes be effectively applied for the LHC complex? Perhaps, the answer is positive: use of the circular modes in the injectors with their transformation into planar modes in the LHC allows both the space charge and beam-beam luminosity limitations to be significantly reduced, if not practically eliminated.

“…They are run at a beam pulse frequency of 1 Hz. 3 Each wire-scanner has three wires to measure the 1D projection of the distribution onto the x, y and u axes, where u is tilted at an angle φ = π/4 above the x axis; xx , yy , and uu can be extracted from these projections, as well as xy from…”

“…A hadron beam with a uniform charge density, elliptical transverse profile, and small four-dimensional (4D) emittance could mitigate space charge effects in circular accelerators and improve collider performance [1,2,3]. A phase space painting method to generate such a distribution is being tested in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accumulator ring [4,5].…”

“…In colliders, it is the case for interaction regions where large solenoidal fields and compensation elements are present. Atypical optics schemes based on strong coupling insertions have also been proposed to improve the performance of lepton and hadron colliders, such as the "Möbius accelerator" [3], planar-to-circular beam adapters for circular modes operation [4], and round beam operation for lepton storage rings [5,6].…”
