Circular Graphene Platelets with Grain Size and Orientation Gradients Grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition

Abstract: Monolayer circular graphene platelets with a grain structure gradient in the radial direction are synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on immiscible W-Cu substrates. Because of the different interactions and growth behaviors of graphene on Cu and tungsten carbide, such substrates cause the formation of grain size and orientation gradients through the competition between Cu and tungsten carbide in graphene growth.

“…The fundamental of this method is such that the gas source (and in some cases the carrying gas as well) is entered into the chamber with a high level of purity. An agent is used to decompose the initial material which, depending on the method, can be the heat given by the heater, plasma, or laser etc …”

Ever since tungsten was found, a wide variety of applications in engineering products were found.…”

“…Previous studies reported that graphene exhibits a variety of shapes, including triangle [14], rectangle [15][16][17][18], hexagon [19][20], U shape [21], circular [22], and dendrites [11,[23][24]. Although graphene with different morphologies could be customized by adjusting the ratio of the hydrogen and argon carrier gas mixture [23,25], the influence of the ratio of methane to hydrogen (CH 4 /H 2 ) on the formation of graphene with different morphologies was not reported systematically.…”

“…The continuous change characteristics of chemical composition and phase arrangement from one side to the other result in multi-level, non-uniformity and multi-scale microstructure. So far, plasma spraying (Wang et al , 2017), chemical vapor deposition (Xin et al , 2017) and powder metallurgy (Zhang et al , 2011) are common methods to prepare bimetallic structures. For manufacturing components of complex structure, the disadvantages of low efficiency and high cost bring about huge challenge.…”
