Circular economy of waste in agrifood supply chain: A review

Abstract: Through a systematic literature review (SLR), this study aims to analyze the progress achieved in international literature regarding the circular economy (CE) of food waste. As a result, we realized that most of the authors considered had proposed different mathematical models, chemical and thermal treatment methods, statistical, and conceptual frameworks, besides that quantitative and qualitative studies to explain the processes related to the waste and CE in the agrifood sector. Furthermore, in business, man… Show more

“…Every systematic literature review follows an implementation protocol guiding the researcher throughout the review process (Cronin et al, 2008; Ouro‐Salim & Guarnieri, 2022). The review procedure for the systematic literature review in this study follows Cronin et al's five‐step protocol (Table 1).…”

“…In summary, addressing food loss and waste, climate change, and their impacts on crop production is vital for ensuring food security and environmental Sustainability (FAO, 2022). By reducing food waste and adopting sustainable practices, businesses and communities can help mitigate these issues and contribute to a more sustainable future (Auwalin et al, 2022; Lugo et al, 2023; Ouro‐Salim & Guarnieri, 2022).…”

“…To address the complexities of implementing the CE approach, scholars have turned to institutional theory, which examines how institutions shape individual and organisational behaviour over time. Within the context of food waste and the CE, institutional theory offers valuable insights (Allen et al, 2021; Do et al, 2022; Fischer & Pascucci, 2017; Fischer et al, 2021; Levänen et al, 2018; Ouro‐Salim & Guarnieri, 2022; Schulz et al, 2019). However, despite the growing interest in CE, its institutionalisation is still in its early stages globally (Guarnieri et al, 2023).…”

“…Particularly for the agri-food sector, there is an explicit diagnosis that it is a major contributor in generating highly polluting side-streams and processing residues, whose uncontrolled disposal and improper handling may have detrimental consequences on the environment. The acknowledgement of this fact has shifted strategies toward adopting sustainable production models, within various circular economy frames [ 1 , 2 ], which aim at valorizing food processing wastes as raw materials for the production of bio-fuels, energy, value-added chemicals, and platform molecules [ 3 ].…”
