Circadian Variations in the Number of Actively Secreting Sebaceous Follicles and Androgen Circadian Rhythms

Abstract: Sebum excretion has been shown to demonstrate a circadian rhythm using a gravimetric method (cigarette paper). With the newly introduced method of Sebutape, we confirmed this periodicity and showed that the elevation in sebum excretion is correlated with an increase in the number of secreting follicles. We found, furthermore, that the number of secreting follicles on the forehead showed a distinct and statistically significant circadian rhythmicity, in contrast to those of the chest, which remained almost cons… Show more

“…The familiar daily activity cycle of sleeping and waking is the most obvious circadian rhythm, but many physiological systems show daily rhythms, including the cardiovascular and metabolic systems (Rüger & Scheer, 2009), immune system (Lange, Dimitrov, & Born, 2010; Brainard, Hanifin, et al (2001), and one dotted line, Thapan et al(2001) Roberts, 2000), and skin (Verschoore, Poncet, Krebs, & Ortonne, 1993). Each of these systems depends on the rhythm of light and dark to maintain the necessary pattern of physiological processes to maintain physical and mental health.…”

“…Facial sebum production oscillates in 8-and 24-hour patterns 3 and is highest in early afternoon and lowest at night. 7 Low nocturnal sebum production contributes to nighttime pruritus as sebum forms a hydrolipid film on the skin surface to maintain hydration. On a cellular level, circadian CLOCK genes regulate skin hydration.…”
