Circadian Typology and Personality Dimensions of Croatian Students of Health-Related University Majors

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between circadian preferences and personality dimensions among 712 students of three different majors from the Faculty of Medicine, Osijek: medical students (MD), nursing students (RN) and medical laboratory diagnostics students (MLD). For the measurement of personality dimensions, the IPIP50 Big-Five questionnaire was used. The circadian preference of students was assessed using the reduced morningness-eveningness questionnaire (rMEQ). Several si… Show more

“…Moreover, agreeableness was also related to morningness, albeit to a lesser degree (80). In contrast, studies conducted on college students after 2010 reported that high extroversion was associated with eveningness and high conscientiousness, openness, and low neuroticism was related to morningness tendency (81,82). However, these were cross-sectional studies, and a longitudinal study showed that only low neuroticism predicted morningness 1 year later (83).…”

“…67 Tobacco smoke contains many kinds of oxides and toxic substances, and when the tear film is exposed to tobacco smoke, it leads to elevated levels of caproyl lysine (a marker of oxidative stress of lipid peroxidation reactions) in the tear fluid 68 , which can lead to tear film dysfunction. 69,70 Milić et al 71 surveyed 712 students majoring in medical-related fields with circadian rhythm preferences and personality dimensions and found that early-rising students scored higher on responsibility and emotional stability. They proposed that medical students should improve their understanding of common personality traits and adhere to certain circadian rhythm preferences in order to choose a more appropriate schedule of classes and work in the future, and avoid sleep deprivation and emotional disorders caused by disturbing circadian rhythm preferences.…”
