Cigarette smoking is related to a decrease in semen volume in a population of fertile men

Abstract: We evaluated sperm concentration, motility, motion variables and hormonal levels in these men. RESULTSThere were no significant differences among the groups in sperm concentration or motility, or in levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, or serum total testosterone. Also, sperm motion characteristics did not differ across the groups. Semen volume was the only semen variable which tended to decrease according to the number of cigarettes smoked. CONCLUSIONSCigarette smoking had no apparent … Show more

“…The effects of tobacco smoking on reproductive function have been performed on a group of infertile patients. A large study conducted by Pasqualotto et al [ 2006] showed a decline in semen volume with an increased number of cigarettes smoked, although no statistically significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of sperm motility, concentration, or morphology [Zenzes 2000]. Another study reported a non-significant change towards higher sperm concentration with more smoking [Oldereid et al 1989], while others showed either a statistically significant dose response relation or a trend towards decreased sperm concentration with increased smoking [Zenzes 2000].…”
