Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and other perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) were measured in liver samples from 29 marine tucuxi dolphins from Rio de Janeiro state (RJ), Brazil. PFC measurement combined liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, using a CapLC system connected to a Quadrupole-LIT mass spectrometer. PFOS was the only PFC detected and it was so in all samples. PFOS concentrations (ng · g -1 dw) of dolphins (n ) 23) from the highly contaminated Guanabara Bay (in RJ) varied between 43 and 2431 as well as between 76 and 427 from areas of RJ other than the quoted bay (n ) 6). Concentrations of three fetuses and one neonate varied between 664 and 1590. Fetus/mother ratios were calculated in two situations (2.75 and 2.62). It seems that mother-to-calf transference plays important role for relationships between PFOS and age. When a one-year-old male calf presenting 2431 ng · g -1 dw was excluded from the test, significant correlations were observed between PFOS concentrations and both age and total length. Despite the placental transference, PFOS concentrations were not significantly lower in females than in males. PFOS levels in marine tucuxi dolphins from Guanabara Bay are among the highest detected to date in cetaceans, and this may represent a threat to the small population concerned.

RESUMOA linhaça (Linum usitatissimum L.) é considerada um alimento funcional, rico em proteínas, fibras e polissacarídeos. No Brasil são comercializadas duas espécies (marrom e dourada), que não diferenciam entre si quanto aos nutrientes. A goma (mucilagem) obtida da linhaça apresenta alta solubilidade e capacidade de estabilizar espumas, podendo ser usada como estabilizantes e espessantes. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o efeito da concentração da goma de linhaça, do pH e da concentração salina nas propriedades espumantes da goma, utilizando um delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC) em esquema fatorial. Primeiramente, foram avaliados a expansão e estabilidade da goma em diferentes níveis de concentração do grão de linhaça (p/v) (2,5%; 5%; 7,5%; 10%; 12,5%; 15%; 17,5% e 20%). Posteriormente, foi avaliado a expansão e a estabilidade da goma de linhaça na concentração de 10%, em função de quatro níveis de pH (3,0; 4,0; 5,0 e 6,0) e cinco concentrações de cloreto de sódio (NaCl) (0; 0,25; 0,5; 0,75 e 1,0 Mol.L -1 ). Foi possível ajustar modelos para todos os parâmetros estudados. Observou-se o efeito da concentração de sal (NaCl), e dos níveis de pH sobre a expansão e estabilidade da espuma da goma de linhaça e esses fatores influenciaram significativamente na propriedade espumante, onde obteve melhores resultados em menores concentrações de sal (0-0,25M) e menores valores de pH (pH 3,0 e 4,0). Esses estudos de propriedades tecnológicas funcionais são importantes para aplicação da goma de linhaça em produtos alimentícios.Palavras-chave: Linum usitatissimum L.

Fire suppression agents are recommended for extinguishing fires by flammable liquids and frequently end in water bodies, combined with the fuels. There is a lack of toxicity information on these commercial formulations and the effects of mixtures of fire suppression agents and fuels. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the toxic effects of different fire suppression agents, the gasoline water‐soluble fraction (GWSF), and mixtures of each fire suppression agent and GWSF. Individual tests were performed with Daphnia similis and Artemia sp.; the most toxic fire suppression agents to D. similis and Artemia sp. were F‐500®, Cold Fire®, Agefoam®, and Kidde Sintex® 1%; the GWSF was the least toxic. The concentration addition model was used to predict the mixture effects and evaluate synergism/antagonism, dose ratio dependence, and dose level dependence. Cold Fire with GWSF showed dose level deviation to D. similis, marked mainly by synergism; for Artemia sp., the dose ratio pattern was predicted, with a synergistic response mainly by Cold Fire. Agefoam and GWSF behaved additively for D. similis and dose ratio for Artemia sp., with synergism being caused by Agefoam. Kidde Sintex 1% with GWSF were dose ratio for both organisms, with Kidde Sintex 1% being responsible for synergism. Our results show that some mixtures of fire suppression agents and GWSF may cause toxicity to aquatic organisms, posing risk in a real environmental scenario, such as a major fire combat.
