Ciclopirox Olamine 1% Cream A Preliminary Review of its Antimicrobial Activity and Therapeutic Use

Abstract: Ciclopirox olamine is a substituted pyridone antimycotic, unrelated to the imidazole derivatives, with activity against a broad spectrum of dermatophytes, yeasts, actinomycetes, molds, other fungi, and a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The efficacy of ciclopirox olamine cream has been demonstrated in open and placebo-controlled studies in patients with superficial dermatophyte or yeast infections, and in double-blind comparative trials in patients with dermatomycoses, topical ciclopirox ol… Show more

“…In summary, the strong inhibitory effects of the active extract of S. auriculata against S. aureus strains can be attributed to compound 1 , a 3,6-dioxygenated steroid, found primarily in aquatic plants [10]. Moreover, this activity may well be associated with a synergism with other compounds that have not yet been isolated from the active extract.…”

“…After incubation at 37°C for 24 h, inhibition zones were measured in millimeters and compared to the controls. The antibiotic ciclopirox olamine (Uci-Farma) was used as the positive control due to its antibacterial properties [10]. Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) was used as a negative control.…”

“…Ciclopirox olamine (CPX) is a commercially available antifungal agent, used widely to treat mycotic infections of the skin [82]. CPX can also chelate iron and induce activation of HIF-1 , nuclear accumulation of HIF-1 , DNA binding of HIF-1, and finally increased expression of HIF-1 target genes [83,84].…”

“…Other antifungal agents including ciclopirox and naftifine, which are not imidazoles structurally, have antibacterial activity. 22 Topical ciclopirox and ketoconazole are Food and Drug Administrationeapproved for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. There may be an overlap of flexural psoriasis with seborrheic dermatitis.…”
