Abstract: The use of fluorescent stains in this animal model provides a means to establish a timeline of the ossification seen in labyrinthitis ossificans.

“…There are papers that demonstrate that ossifi cation can occur as early as 2 months after meningitis (Novak et al, 1990) on computed tomographic scans. There are also animal studies (Nabili et al, 1999) demonstrating that ossifi cation occurs within the cochlea as early as 3 weeks after intrathecal injection of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Early diagnosis would allow early amplifi cation of hearing and 'fast tracking' of cochlear implantation where needed before severe ossifi cation occurs as this can make cochlear implantation much more diffi cult.…”

“…Clinically, patients have been described with heterotopic ossifications of cutaneous (18,19), intratendinous (20), pulmonary (21), and cochlear and vestibular lumenal (22) sites. Severe examples of dysregulated bone formation include myositis ossificans, a progressive ossification of striated muscle and faciitis (23), and fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, which refers to postnatal heterotopic ossification of connective tissue (24).…”

“…Obliteration of the cochlear lumina is a major problem in survivors of meningitis, because it worsens the prognosis of cochlear implants. 17 Now, to test whether adjunctive antioxidant therapy is a promising strategy for the prevention of meningitis-induced hearing impairment, we assessed the effect of the two peroxynitrite scavengers Mn(III)tetrakis(4-bencoic acid)-porphyrin (MnTBAP) and N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) in our well-established rat model of pneumococcal meningitis.…”
