Chronic Toxicity, Genotoxic Assay, and Phytochemical Analysis of Four Traditional Medicinal Plants

Abstract: Four medicinal plants--Tecoma stans, Ligusticum porteri, Monarda austromontana, and Poliomintha longiflora, which are distributed in tropical and subtropical countries of the American continent--are widely used in folk medicine to treat diseases such as diarrhea and dysentery. In addition, T. stans and P. longiflora are extensively used as hypoglycemic agents, and M. austromontana and P. longiflora are used as condiments. The plants were collected, identified, dried, and pulverized. Solvent extraction was prep… Show more

“…Natural products are a rich source of new drugs, and a large number of substances with cytotoxic activity have been isolated from plants (Araujo and Leon, 2001; Lachenmeier et al , 2006; Castaneda et al , 2011; Li et al , 2011). For instance, Vincristine (Oncovin®), an alkaloid found in species of the family Apocynaceae, is used as an antitumor agent in oncology.…”

“…Medicinal plants such as Terminalia arjuna and Enicostemma littorale have been used for their anti-hyperlipidemic effects,[1920] whereas Tecoma stans and Poliomintha longiflora have been used as therapy for their hypoglycemic properties. [21]…”

“…Not signs of toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster larvae being fed aqueous extracts of aerial parts for 48 h (Sortibrań et al, 2011). A 50% alcoholic leaf extract showed no acute toxicity up to 5,000 mg/kg PO and no signs of chronic toxicity at 500 mg/kg/d over 28 days in mice (Larbie et al, 2019).…”
