Chronic Pancreatitis and Pancreatic Cancer Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract: Chronic pancreatitis is a putative risk factor for pancreatic cancer. The aim of this study was to examine the magnitude and temporality of this association. We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for observational studies investigating the association between chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. We computed overall effect estimates (EEs) with associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using a random-effects meta-analytic model. The EEs were stratified by length of follow-up from chronic pancreatitis diagnosis t… Show more

“…Chronic pancreatitis is also a risk factor for developing pancreatic cancer, with the risk increasing with the duration of disease. 5355 Since gut dysbiosis has been postulated to contribute to chronic pancreatic inflammation, it may also contribute to the pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer in the setting of chronic pancreatitis.…”

“…Chronic pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease characterized by progressive and irreversible destruction of the exocrine and endocrine pancreas . Some patients with chronic pancreatitis eventually progress to pancreatic cancer, which has a poor prognosis . While this progression has not been fully elucidated, inflammatory activation of pancreatic stellate cells may play an important role .…”

“…1 More than 400 000 deaths annually due to pancreatic cancer are observed in the worldwide. 4,5 In contrast to the increase in survival for most cancer types, the 5-year relative survival rate for pancreatic cancer is about 8% in the United States. However, deaths from pancreatic cancer are predicted to be the second leading cause of mortality in the United States by 2030.…”
