Chronic Pain and Its Impact on Quality of Life in Adolescents and Their Families

Abstract: Chronic pain, not caused by somatic disease, was present to a higher degree in girls; the pain increased during the day and had a negative impact on quality of life of the adolescents and the family. There is a need for future research aimed at identifying risk factors for chronic pain and pain-associated quality of life in children and adolescents.

“…HRQOL is a subjective, multidimensional construct that relates to the individual's relevant life domains 19 . Numerous investigations have indicated that the experience of chronic, recurrent pain substantially impacts the daily life of children and adolescents 8,24,26 , leading to decrements in physical 8, 11 , psychological 9, 10, 21 and social functioning 11, 24 . Relatively little is known however, about the factors influencing HRQOL in chronic pediatric pain. Whereas increased pain is associated with lower HRQOL 8, 14, 22, 24 , pain characteristics have accounted for relatively small amounts of variance 6,8 .…”

“…Compared to families with typically developing children, a child with a disability poses specific challenges. A multitude of adverse effects of a disability on the family have been found, including higher levels of stress, lower well-being, more negative feelings on parenting, less marital satisfaction, a financial and a caretaker burden (Baker, Blacher, & Olsson, 2005;Blacher & McIntyre, 2006;Hatton & Emerson, 2003;Hunfeld et al, 2001;Maes, Broekman, Dosen, & Nauts, 2003;McIntyre, Blacher, & Baker, 2002;Wilkinson et al, 2001). …”

“…Therefore, cross-sector collaborations are important to reduce suicide [16]. Through an interdisciplinary approach incorporating behavioral health professionals into the regular assessment and management of pediatric pain patients, efforts to eliminate suicide will be maximized [17][18][19][20][21].…”
