Chronic Inflammation And Neutrophil Activation As Possible Causes Of Joint Diseases In Ballet Dancers

Abstract: Herein, we investigated the effects of a ballet class on the kinetic profiles of creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities, cytokines, complement component 3 (C3), and the concentrations of immunoglobulin (Ig), IgA and IgM, in ballerinas. We also verified neutrophil death and ROS release. Blood samples were taken from 13 dancers before, immediately after, and 18 hours after a ballet class. The ballet class increased the plasma activities of CK-total (2.0-fold) immediately after class, whi… Show more

“…It appears to be somewhat joint dependent and, predictably, age dependent. Plasma inflammatory markers were present in dancers immediately through 18 h following a classical ballet dance class (16), suggesting that participation in ballet is sufficiently intense as to stimulate an immunological response that could adversely affect joint cartilage. Evidence of OA was found in several joints of the lower extremity following MRI of professional ballet dancers (17).…”

“…The lack of osteoarthritic changes on imaging in young dancers also may be a function of subclinical microtraumatic changes in joint cartilage that are not seen on early imaging, are compounded over time, and must progress sufficiently to eventually become apparent on imaging (22). Of additional concern is a postulated chronic inflammation with neutrophil activation in dancers that may adversely affect joint cartilage (16).…”

“…Spleen lymphocytes (2 × 10 6 ) were incubated for 30 min in a dark room in the presence of a solution containing the fluorochrome rhodamine 123 (2.6 M) in PBS [31]. Rhodamine 123 is a cell permeant, cationic, fluorescent dye that is sequestered by active mitochondria without inducing cytotoxic effects [32]. Cells with fluorescent rhodamine were then evaluated by flow cytometry (511/534 nm).…”
