Chronic Erosive (Verrucous) Gastritis: A Study of 108 Patients

Abstract: Chronic erosive gastritis (C.E.G.) is a gastric mucosal lesionwith characteristic radiological and endoscopic appearances. Pyloric gland hyperplasia is seen on histological examination of biopsy specimens. C.E.G. is uncommonly reported in the English literature. In reviewing 3,800 upper gastro-intestinal endoscopies from 1971--1976, 108 patients were diagnosed as having typical features of chronic erosive gastritis, an incidence of 2.8%. There was a significant association with duodenal ulceration and an overa… Show more

“…Karvonen' reported that maximum acid output (MAO) in patients with active erosions was significantly higher than in controls. Nesland and Berstad,' 3 however, reported that MAO in patients with grade 2 or 3 erosive prepyloric changes was not significantly different from the values for healthy subjects, but 564 Tatsuta, lishi, and Okluda In the present study, we found that, by the endoscopic Congo red-methylene blue test, erosive gastritis was significantly more frequently associated with large acid secreting areas than control patients. In our study, control patients consisted not of healthy subjects but of patients who had been suspected of having gastrointestinal diseases but who were found to be normal on gastroduodenal endoscopic examination.…”

“…In the same patients, enlarged folds have also been observed.7 [12][13][14][15] There is still disagreement, however, about the definition, limits, and even the very existence of this radiological and endoscopical entity, which has been labelled 'varioliform gastritis',5610 'chronic erosive gastritis',7 8 or 'chronic verrucous gastritis'. 16 The limits of this entity have always been quite vague, and its diagnosis uncertain because of the absence of any reliable histopathological pattern. Consequently, some well known pathology textbooks do not even mention it.9' Our own retrospective review reflects the difficulties met by our team of endoscopists: in spite of full descriptions of the basic lesions found in the files, the diagnosis varied between varioliform, aphthoid, and erosive gastritis.…”
