Chronic daily headache in Chinese elderly

Abstract: A total of 3.9% of this elderly population had CDH, with CTTH being the most common subtype. Almost two-thirds of those with CDH had persistent frequent headaches at follow-up. Analgesic overuse was a significant predictor of a poor outcome.

“…Drug overuse, according to Silberstein et al's criteria [32], was found in two-thirds of the cases of transformed migraine and in almost one-third of the cases of chronic tension-type headache. Similar data have been reported in other studies conducted in European and North American populations [18,32], whereas in China drug abuse was found in less than 25% of the patients affected by chronic headache, probably in relation to sociocultural and environmental factors [19]. The most frequent secondary headaches were headache associated with cervical spine disorder and trigeminal neuralgia, as also found in the few studies conducted in geriatric patients [23,34].…”

“…In our study, patients over 65 years of age accounted for 6.4% of the whole adult headache population which was studied. Primary headaches (81.6% of the cases) were more frequent than secondary headaches (14.9%), consistent with the data reported in the literature [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][26][27][28][29][30]. Among primary headaches, migraine without aura, transformed migraine and chronic tension-type headache, which accounted for 79.6% of the cases, were the most frequent disorders, with similar prevalences.…”

“…In a Chinese study, overuse of analgesic drugs was a signicant risk factor for developing chronic daily headache in a community-based population of elderly individuals (18). Investigating the use of analgesics is important if we are to understand and correctly treat patients with chronic daily headache.…”
