Chronic cough—the limitation and advances in assessment techniques

Abstract: Accurate and consistent assessments of cough are essential to advance the understanding of the mechanisms of cough and individualised the management of patients. Considerable progress has been made in this work. Here we reviewed the currently available tools for subjectively and objectively measuring both cough sensitivity and severity. We also provided some opinions on the new techniques and future directions. The simple and practical Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ), and th… Show more

“…33 Although no cough detection or diagnostic technology has yet achieved FDA approval, multiple cough monitoring devices, including VitaloJak and the Leicester Cough Monitor, have been used in research. 34 More recently, several app-based ventures, notably ResApp (for cough sound diagnosis) 35 and Hyfe (for cough counting), 36 have continued to develop rapidly and are likely to apply for regulatory approval for clinical use in the near future. Should this technology become clinically available, it has the potential to significantly impact the practice of otolaryngologists.…”

“…Biomarkers including 24-hour cough counts and the Leicester Cough Questionnaire quantify cough severity. Gabapentin is an effective treatment, and this desensitizes cough receptors, leading to improved cough control and reduced cough frequency and severity [ 25 ].…”

“…There is emerging data about early, subtle signs of cancer, and some of these may be amenable to detection by electronic sensors and monitoring of behavior (see Table 1). Examples of signals for health features that could be related to cancer Sensors currently available on some smartphones or wearables Audio signals from microphones [13] • Changes in cough and breathing difficulty (associated with lung cancer) [14] •…”
