Chromosomes ofDamaliscus (Artiodactyla, Bovidae): Simple and complex centric fusion rearrangements

Abstract: G- and C-banded karyotypes of Damaliscus hunteri, D. lunatus and D. pygargus were compared using the standard karyotype of Bos taurus. Chromosomal complements were 2n = 36 in D. lunatus jimela, 2n = 38 in D. pygargus phillipsi and D. p. pygargus, and 2n = 44 in D. hunteri. The fundamental number in all karyotypes was 60. Among the three species of Damaliscus, seven autosomal pairs and the X chromosomes were conserved. Y-chromosome differences were attributed to heterochromatic additions or deletions. Banded ka… Show more

“…The reciprocal painting confirmed previous description of homologies obtained with Gbanding (Kumamoto et al 1996) 2;25, 3;19, 4;7, 5;14, 6;16, 8;11 and 10;12. Paints specific to each human chromosome delineated 51 conserved segments (see human paint probe HSA12 delineates a segment on DHU chromosome 12 that has not yet been described in bovid homologs (magenta arrow).…”

“…Damaliscus hunteri followed the ISCNDA (1989) nomenclature (Kumamoto et al 1996). We present the chromosome homologies following ISCNDB No reciprocal t r a ns lo cat io n was observed that would distinguish both karyotypes.…”

“…Cell culturing, harvesting, and chromosome banding followed the techniques described by Kumamoto et al (1996). G-band homology between Oryx taxa was identified with a standardized numbering that followed the standard karyotype of cattle, Bos taurus (Popescu et al, 1996).…”
