“…One group of S. sanguineum plastomes clustered with American Schizachyrium (S. scoparium and S. spicatum) and the other with Asian species (S. exile and S. brevifolium). All S. sanguineum samples were collected in Thailand, suggesting either a deep coalescence of chloroplast haplotypes within S. sanguineum that predate the geographical disjunction of other Schizachyrium species or admixture of haplotypes through allopolyploidy as discussed below (Peichoto et al 2011;Estep et al 2014).…”

“…This species has been reported to have a great range of allopolyploid levels based on cytology and analysis of low-copy loci (Peichoto et al 2011;Estep et al 2014). The two independent S. sanguineum clades could represent distinct allopolyploidy events.…”

“…Based on the scores of the four pollen grain parameters, we performed separate non-metric multidimensional scalings (NMDSs) both for the C3/C4 group and diploid/polyploid groups [using the meta-multidimensional scaling (MDS) function available in the vegan package of R; Oksanen et al 2013]. The NMDS scores of the four pollen grain parameters were plotted for C3/C4 species and diploid/polyploid species separately.…”

“…Ploidy variation within Schizachyrium has been seen from 2n = 2x = 20 to 2n = 10x = 100 (Peichoto et al, 2011). Schizachyrium scoparium has been found to be 2n = 4x = 40 (Carman and Hatch, 1982); S. condensatum has been found to be 2n = 2x = 20 and 2n = 4x = 40 (Peichoto et al, 2011); and S. sanguineum has been found to be 2n = 2x = 20, 2n = 3x = 30, 2n = 4x = 40, 2n = 5x = 50, 2n = 6x = 60, 2n = 7x = 70, 2n = 8x = 80, and 2n = 10x = 100 (Peichoto et al, 2011). Ploidy variation was determined by flow cytometry on the 75 S. scoparium accessions obtained from the USDA and all plants had a ploidy level the same as the assumed tetraploid (2n = 4x = 40).…”
