“…In P. centralis and P. soaresi secondary constriction was reported in the smallest pair of the complement ( DENARO 1972;DE LUCCA et al 1974). Physalaemus albijrons was described by DENARO (1 972) as carrying a secondary constriction in pair 1 1 and in pair 2 but OLIVEIRA and YONENAGA-YASSUDA (1995) reported secondary constriction in pair 9 for specimens from another locality.…”

“…All species have a diploid number of 22 chromosomes. By examining the available karyograms (BECAK 1968;BECAK et al 1970;DENARO 1972;DE LUCCA et al 1974;SILVA 1998), it was possible to recognize two basic karyotypic formulas for the genus. One comprises only metacentrics and submetacentrics whereas the other, although very similar to the former, also includes a pair of small telocentric chromosomes.…”

“…The karyotype of Lithodytes lineatus, another taxon included in Leptodactylus by Frost et al (2006), are composed of 18 biarmed chromosomes (Bogart 1970) and Vanzolinius discodactylus has a 2n=22 karyotype very similar to the other Leptodactylus above referred (Heyer and Diment 1974). Results of Frost et al (2006) and Grant et al (2006) suggest that the clade including Paratelmatobius and Scythrophrys is the sister group of Leptodactylus, and in both genus karyotypes with 24 chromosomes were observed (De Lucca et al 1974, Lourenço et al 2000, 2001, 2003. Taking a conservative approach to the contents of Leptodactylus (i.e., excluding Adenomera, Lithodytes, and Vanzolinius) the distinct diploid number of L. silvanimbus could be interpreted according to two different hypotheses.…”

“…The cytogenetic information on Paratelmatobius is restricted to the chromosome number and morphology of the karyotype of P. lutzii (DE LUCCA et al 1974). To provide more data for a phylogenetic analysis of this group, we have done a cytogenetic study of the living species of Paratelmatobius, P. cardosoi Pombal Jr. and Haddad and P. poecilogaster Giaretta and Castanho (see review by POMBAL JR. and HADDAD 1999).…”

“…The proximity between the genera Paratelmatobius and Scythrophrys, suggested by LYNCH (1971) andHEYER (1975), was also indicated by GARCIA (1996). Based on ecological and morphological characters, GARCIA (1 996) suggested a closer relationship between Scythrophrys and P. gaigeae ( = P. cardosoi sensu POMBAL JR. and HAD-DAD 1999) than between this species of Paratelmatobius and P. lutzii, and suggested a revision of both of these genera. The cytogenetic information on Paratelmatobius is restricted to the chromosome number and morphology of the karyotype of P. lutzii (DE LUCCA et al 1974).
