“…A., Dec. 13, 1982) Although many authors (Morgan et al 1956 ;Allam et al 1958;Hauschka and Levan 1958 ;Ising 1960 ;Kimura and Kikuchi 1961) failed to detect any change in property of the cells after deep freezing, the present author (Yosida 1968) had demonstrated that diploid cells of the cultured mouse embryos are preferentially selected by storage in the deep freezer than in tetraploid cells. A similar feature was presented in tumor MPMC-53 cells in the Indian spiny mouse, in which the near-diploid cells were more stable in deep freezing than in the near-polyploid cells (Yosida 1982) .…”

“…Some experimental tumours can be stored at -79°C or -196°C and retain their transplantability without the use of any cryoprotectant (Ising, 1960) although it is likely that, in some cases at least, this is due to preservation of tumour viruses rather than intact cells (Gye et al, 1949). The addition of glycerol (Hauschka et al, 1959) or DMSO (Greenberg, 1966) has generally yielded more consistent results, but precise information on optimum conditions and quantitative estimations of survival are available for very few malignant cells.…”
