Chosen postures during specific sitting activities

Abstract: This research study analysed the interaction between people's postures and activities while in semi-public/leisure situations and during transportation (journey by train). In addition, the use of small electronic devices received particular emphasis. Video recordings in German trains and photographs in Dutch semi-public spaces were analysed using a variation of Branton and Grayson's (An evaluation of train seats by observation of sitting behaviour. Ergonomics, 10 (1), (1967), 35-51) postural targeting forms an… Show more

“…It is generally encouraged to periodically engage in non-sedentary activities [3], since remaining seated causes discomfort over time. However, this is not possible when traveling by car since both the vehicle interior and the driving task restrain posture [4] and thus it would result into abandoning the driving task and interrupting the journey.…”

“…In order to determine the participant's posture, a rapid coding technique was used as applied by for instance Kamp et al [4] or Branton and Grayon [19]. Due to the restriction of the trunk by the seat, only the position of the head, arms and legs were observed.…”

“…However, the buses used in the study did not seem to be microbuses as the passengers were able to stand up. Most research on passenger sitting postures has been conducted on trains [12]- [15], with results showing that passengers tend to sit in different postures depending on the activities they are performing [14], [15]. In Indonesia, studies on angkot microbuses have been reported with different range of topics, e.g.…”

“…Meanwhile, passengers might vary in terms of their sitting postures due to their activities during travel [14]. Therefore, comprehending this issue is essential to provide an initial stepping-stone for designing an ergonomically acceptable design of microbus in general and angkot in specific.…”
