Choroidal Thickness Changes After Vitrectomy With Silicone Oil Tamponade for Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy Retinal Detachment

Abstract: Choroidal thickness is reduced in eyes receiving silicone oil intraocular tamponade. Silicone oil tamponade may have an impact on the structure and proper functioning of the choroid. The measurements of the choroidal thickness by optical coherence tomography might be a very good tool to detect early changes in choroidal thickness and impact the decision when to remove silicone oil.

“…This may suggest that in our study, the decrement in choroidal thickness may have been due to the SO and not secondary to PPV. Similar to our study, Odroniba et al [13] reported that SFCT decreased after PPV+SO, but they used 1,000-cSt SO and the follow-up duration was 6 months, while we used 5,700-cSt SO and a follow-up duration lasting up to 18 months for some patients. In contrast to our study, Akkoyun and Yilmaz [9] did not find any changes in choroidal thickness after PPV+SO in the RRD eyes, but they had fewer cases (8 patients) and the duration of follow-up was only 6 months.…”

“…A few earlier studies had reported the changes in the choroidal thickness after vitrectomy for treatment of RRD [9,11,13]. Some authors performed vitrectomy plus C 3 F 8 gas tamponade for macula-off RRD and, unlike our study, they showed no significant change in the choroidal thickness 1 month and 6 months after vitrectomy [11].…”

“…In this retrospective observational study, we observed a decrease in subfoveal choroidal thickness in the second month (8±2 weeks) following SO removal compared to the first month after the PPV and SO injection in patients who underwent PPV and SO injection due to RRD. Several studies have shown that choroidal thickness decreases after PPV (7)(8)(9). In a study regarding the changes in choroidal thickness in patients undergoing PPV and C3F8 injection due to RRD with macular involvement, it has shown that the subfoveal choroidal thickness has not changed (10).…”
