Choroidal fissure and choroidal fissure cysts: a comprehensive review

Abstract: In this paper, the authors discuss the embryology and anatomy of the choroidal fissure, as well as the pathophysiology and treatment of cerebrospinal fluid cysts of this structure. Understanding its anatomical relations to nearby structures plays an essential role during brain surgeries. With the advancement and availability of imaging techniques, lesions of the choroidal fissure are often found incidentally. Patients are usually asymptomatic or exhibit symptoms that do not correlate with anatomical location o… Show more

“…There are several types of noncancerous cystic masses resulting from congenital abnormalities with different embryological origins [109]. Choroidal fissure cysts refer to non-cancerous cysts that develop within the choroidal fissure [110]; hippocampal sulcus remnant cysts resemble a "string of beads" between the cornu ammonis and dentate gyrus [111]. The differentiation with PVS is based on their specific location within the brain.…”

“…Dagegen bildet sich die Sulcus-hippocampalis-Zyste gewöhnlich zwischen dem Cornu ammonis und dem Gyrus dentatus (▶ Abb.17). Es handelt sich dabei um benigne intrakranielle Zysten, die im MRT isointens zum Liquor sind [8] und in der Regel keine klinische Relevanz haben [49].…”

“…Choroidal fissure cysts are benign intracranial cysts that can be either neuroepithelial or arachnoid type and are found at the level of the choroid fissure (Figure 6). 55 In rare cases, these may cause seizures due to mass effect on the temporal lobe. 56 Both types of cysts are usually benign and are found incidentally.…”
