Chorionic morphine, naltrexone and pentoxifylline effect on hypophyso-gonadal hormones of male rats

Abstract: Abstract:Background: Knowledge about harmful effects of morphine on hormone secretion seems to be necessary. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of pentoxifylline on side effects derived by morphine on hypophyso-gonadal hormones of male rats. Methods: 32 male rats were divided into the 4 groups of OSS: control (received 40 g Sucrose/l drinking water and intraperitoneal injection of 1 l/kg normal saline), OMS: morphine group (received 0.4 mg/l + 40 g Sucrose/l in drinking water and intraperi… Show more

“…The serum samples were then kept in deep freezer (-18 ºC) until measurement of testosterone hormone by ELISA method. Also, the testes were separated and weighed separately and then preserved in neutral buffered formalin 10 % (Keshtmand et al, 2015;Moradi et al, 2015).…”

“…Many studies have revealed the infertility effects of morphine administration on males by decreasing testosterone serum level and inducing histological damage on testis and sperms (Yilmaz et al, 1999;Moradi et al, 2014). Studies have shown the existence of morphine receptors in sertoli and leydig cells of testis and have further addressed the involvement of inflammation and oxidation during male reproductive system exposure to morphine by producing NO and regulating inflammatory cascades (Jalili et al, 2016;Chehrei et al, 2017).…”

“…on fertility by decreasing serum level of pituitary-gonad axis as we previously have represented in male rats (Bliesener et al, 2005;Cicero, Davis, LaRegina, Meyer, & Schlegel, 2002;Moradi et al, 2015;Sokolowska-Mikolajczyk, Socha, & Mikolajczyk, 2005). α: Statistical difference between control (OS)and experimental groups (p < 0.001).…”

“…Regarding male sex hormone secretions, it have been shown that prescription of morphine reduces plasma levels of testosterone and LH in rats (Moradi, Mahmoodi, Raoofi, & Ghanbari, 2015;Yilmaz et al, 1999) and the activation of kisspeptin-GPR54 system promoting hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis offered to explain the reduction in testosterone level of morphine-treated subjects (Mahmoudi, Khazali, & Janahmadi, 2014). The dissimilarities of histological features, seen following morphine utilisation, have been described by free radical production leading to oxidative stress in tissues such as testis (Liu et al, 2014) and kidney (Patel et al, 2003).…”
