Choriogonadotropin-like antigen in an anaerobic bacterium, Eubacterium lentum, isolated from a rectal tumor

Abstract: Using the indirect fluorescein-labeled and indirect peroxidase-antiperoxidaselabeled immunohistochemical techniques, and utilizing both antiserum specific for the f8-subunit of choriogonadotropin and antiserum for the total hormone, we have demonstrated the presence of a choriogonadotropin-like immunoreactive material in a strain of Eubacterium lentum that was originally isolated from a rectal tumor. In contrast, both immunohistochemical reactions were negative when applied to a strain of Corynebacterium parvu… Show more

“…This data is in agreement with the findings of Acevedo and his group (1,2,20), who have demonstrated, by immunoelectron microscopy with the indirect peroxidase-antiperoxidase-labeled antibody technique, the presence of the hCG-like material in the membrane of cancerassociated bacteria (both aerobic and anaerobic). Maruo and his colleagues (13) also concluded that the acetone extracts prepared from bacteria isolated from tumors is hCG-like since its elution pattem on a Sephadex G-100 column is similar to that of 125I-labeled hCG.…”

“…Finally, the findings of the present studies added to those of our previous investigations (1,2,12,15) continue to support the possibility of the existence of a biological association between these intriguing microorganisms and clinically manifested cancer.…”

“…Both cancer-associated bacterial strains S. simulans RU-1 and S. faecalis AK presented a positive reaction when screened with the indirect immunofluorescein reaction utilizing antiserum to total CG. Positive results were also obtained when they were subsequently tested with the indirect immunoperoxidase reaction and subjected to all the reagent and cell controls that we have previously described (1,2). Both bacteria also gave positive results with both reactions when tested using antiserum to CGa (R-112) and antiserum to CG,B The reactivity to antiserum R-141 of both bacteria was clearly influenced by VCN treatment, as illustrated by one of the titrations depicted in Table 1, whereas the treatment did not produce any effect with antiserum R-525, the anti-CG,8…”
