Chorangioma of placenta with high risk pregnancy: A case series

Abstract: Chorangioma is the most common benign tumor of placenta, with an incidence of approximately 1%. Tumors larger than 5 cm are associated with maternal and fetal complications. We report four cases of chorangioma that were identified in mostly primigravida (75%) with a mean gestational age of 33 wks (Range 28-33 wks). All except one case, complete placenta was received with mean weight of 550 g (Range 400-800 g) and tumor size of 9.4 cm (Range 0.5-23 cm). Microscopy showed capillary proliferation resembling fetal… Show more

“…[3] The various factors linked with the pathogenesis include environmental factors like high altitude, hypoxic stimulus suggested by elevated nucleated red blood cells in the fetal circulation and vascular growth factors. [1] In most of the cases, chorangiomas are small or microscopic with no clinical significance. [2] Large chorangiomas are associated with adverse clinical outcome.…”

“…[19] Table 4 highlights the associated complications of CA in various studies in the recent literature. [1,20,[22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29] The most common of these complications causing perinatal morbidity are polyhydramnios and preterm delivery, the later being the result of hydramnios. [19] The present study case of giant CA also had polyhydramnios with associated IUGR.…”

“…[5,6] Chorioangiomas can grossly be confused with degenerated myoma, subamniotic hematoma, placental teratoma and placental infarction. [7,8] So, a thorough histopathological examination and clinico-radiological correlation is necessary for identifying chorioangiomas.…”
