Chondrocalcinosis in elderly persons

Abstract: Fifty-eight elderly people were surveyed for chondrocalcinosis with knee, hip and pelvic roentgenograms using Type M industrial x-ray film. Chondrocalcinosis was found in 16 subjects (27.6v/,), an incidence greater than reported in previous studies. Roentgenograms of the knees alone showed the presence of chondrocalcinosis in 15 subjects. Varus deformity of the knees, increased wrist complaints and wrist involvement with clinical arthritis were significantly more common in subjects with chondrocalcinosis. Symp… Show more

“…Pseudogout is one of the most common forms of crystal-associated arthritis associated with CPPD deposition in the joints and periarticular tissues (1)(2)(3). The prevalence of CPPD deposition is extremely high and it is reported that knee chondrocalcinosis, which is assumed to be due to CPPD deposition, is found in 9.6% of individuals older than 50 years old, and this incidence increases with age (4,5). Attacks of pseudogout can be either monoarticular or oligoarticular, and the most commonly affected joints are the knees, followed by the shoulders, wrists, and ankles (2).…”

“…Subsequent radiological surveys suggested that the incidence of chondrocalcinosis is nearer 5 % (McCarty 1977). Recently Ellman and Levin (1975) studied an elderly Jewish population and found that 27-6y% had chondrocalcinosis. These discrepancies are partly due to the different ages of the populations studied; chondrocalcinosis is more common in the elderly (Menin et al, 1977).…”
