Choice of battery energy storage for a hybrid renewable energy system

Abstract: There are certain unelectrified villages across the Indian subcontinent where providing supply through the grid is difficult due to forest cover or mountainous terrain. The most feasible option is to provide off-grid electrification through renewable energy resources such as solar or wind energy. These intermittent sources do not promise a 24 × 7 supply system. Thus, along with solar or wind energy systems, it becomes important to use a renewable resource, such as biomass, which is available in abundance in ru… Show more

“…Battery autonomy refers to the number of hours a battery can support the critical load without charging during the main failure. Achieving some battery autonomy is necessary, especially during the rainy season when the output PV power cannot meet the load demand [60]. The simulation results indicate that the battery autonomy of the LF strategy was 8.94 h, which was the highest among those of other strategies.…”

“…Battery autonomy (BT) represents the fraction of time when the storage supplies the load but does not get charged in the primary breakdown. Reaching some BT is essential, mainly when the PV generated power cannot satisfy the load requirement [17]. The BT is 12.1 h for PV/grid/batteries configuration based on the simulation results in this investigation.…”
