“…In Britain chloramphenicol is recommended for use only in cases of Haemophilus influenzae meningitis and typhoid fever. This is because of its ability to cause a non‐dose‐dependent, usually irreversible, aplastic anaemia, which occurs once every 25,000 to 40,000 courses of oral chloramphenicol 1 . Hospice usage of chloramphenicol clearly falls outside these indications and therefore can only be justified if hospice patients have special requirements which this drug shows some advantage in meeting.…”
