The years 1289–1313 witnessed particularly prolific minting activities at different southern and central Greek mints on behalf of different polities. The coin issues are of great economic and political relevance, and therefore of interest to modern historians. Our understanding of these is based on traditional sources, either numismatic (types and finds), or historical. This paper aims to investigate the possibilities of adding further details to the picture through archaeometry. Specifically, tournois pennies of the three main mints of the region (Clarentza, Thebes, Naupaktos) excavated at Ancient Corinth were analysed according to two different non-destructive methods, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The resulting relative silver percentages and the fingerprints of the trace elements have supported our attempts to put the different coin types in chronological order and to add detail to the context and intent for each one of these. A vivid picture of monetary production emerges. The different issuing authorities were usually intent on maintaining a decent standard while variously trying to put pressure on rivals or to harmonise their productions with their allies. All the analysed mints were commercial in character, though they were subject to the great political changes affecting Greece in this period, the ambitions of the Angevin dynasty, the various challenges which it faced in Athens, the Peloponnese and the western Mainland, and finally the destructive arrival of the Catalans. In times of need, specifically military, these same mints could therefore rely on further bullion which reached them through internal or external political channels.

Στην παρούσα διατριβή εξετάζεται εφυαλωμένη κεραμική που προήλθε από ανασκαφές που πραγματοποιήθηκαν στην Καδμεία, την ακρόπολη της Θήβας, από τις αρμόδιες Εφορείες Αρχαιοτήτων, την 1η και 23η ΕΒΑ και τη Θ΄ ΕΠΚΑ. Χρονικά, το υλικό ανήκει στην περίοδο της Φραγκοκρατίας (1204 -1460) και την Οθωμανική περίοδο (1460 -1829).Οι στόχοι της διατριβής ήταν:1.Η παρουσίαση των κατηγοριών εφυαλωμένης κεραμικής που συνυπάρχουν την περίοδο αυτή στη Θήβα• αφενός οι κατηγορίες που συνεχίζουν τη Βυζαντινή παράδοση και αφετέρου η εισηγμένη κεραμική από τη Δύση (Ιταλία, Ισπανία), την Ανατολή (Συρία, Ιράν, Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία) και την Άπω Ανατολή (Κίνα).2.Η συναγωγή συμπερασμάτων σχετικά με τις εμπορικές επαφές της Θήβας με τα κέντρα παραγωγής κεραμικής που λειτουργούσαν εντός και εκτός των εδαφών της Βυζαντινής Αυτοκρατορίας.3.Η πιθανότητα εντοπισμού τοπικής - Θηβαϊκής παραγωγής κεραμικής.4.Η συναγωγή πιθανών συμπερασμάτων σχετικά με την οικιστική δομή της Καδμείας. Μεθοδολογικά, προηγήθηκε η επιλογή και καταγραφή 1600 οστράκων εφυαλωμένων αγγείων, με κριτήριο τη διαγνωσιμότητα, αλλά και τη σπανιότητα εμφάνισης της κατηγορίας. Με κριτήριο την αντιπροσωπευτικότητα της κατηγορίας έγινε η τελική επιλογή των 575 οστράκων, τα οποία κατατάχθηκαν σε 30 συνολικά κατηγορίες. Η μελέτη διαρθρώνεται σε δύο τόμους. Στον πρώτο τόμο τίθενται συνοπτικά τα προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίστηκαν, η μέθοδος που ακολουθήθηκε, οι στόχοι και η συνεισφορά στην έρευνα. Επίσης, παρουσιάζεται το ιστορικό πλαίσιο, η τοπογραφία της Καδμείας και η ιστορία των ανασκαφικών ερευνών. Ακολουθεί η παρουσίαση των διαφορετικών κατηγοριών κεραμικής που εντοπίστηκαν. Στη συνέχεια, συζητείται το ζήτημα της τοπικής παραγωγής στη Θήβα. Τέλος, παραθέτονται τα συμπεράσματα, όπως αυτά προκύπτουν μέσα από τη μελέτη των ευρημάτων. Ο κατάλογος της κεραμικής από την Καδμεία συνιστά το δεύτερο τόμο της μελέτης. Συμπερασματικά: 1.Περιλαμβάνονται αντιπροσωπευτικά αγγεία από όλες τις κατηγορίες κεραμικής που παράγονται και κυκλοφορούν την ίδια περίοδο στη Μεσόγειο. 2.Τα αγγεία ανήκουν χρονικά σε όλη την υπό εξέταση περίοδο (13ος – αρχές 19ου αι.) και είναι μάρτυρες των αλλαγών που βίωσε η πόλη.3.Ο κύριος όγκος των κεραμικών ακολουθεί τεχνοτροπικά τη Βυζαντινή παράδοση, ενώ η πλειονότητα της εισηγμένης κεραμικής προέρχεται από εργαστήρια της Ιταλίας.4.Η παρουσία κατηγοριών κεραμικής που σπάνια απαντούν στον Ελλαδικό χώρο (κεραμική από Ισπανία, Συρία, Ιράν, Κίνα, εργαστήρια της Μιλήτου), δεν δηλώνει συστηματικό εμπόριο, αλλά πρόκειται μάλλον για μεμονωμένες και περιστασιακές εισαγωγές.5.Έγινε φανερός ο διαχρονικά πολυπολιτισμικός χαρακτήρας της Θήβας, η θέση της μέσα στο δίκτυο διακίνησης αγαθών, αλλά και η ευμάρεια και η σπουδαιότητα της πόλης.6.Όσον αφορά στον οικιστικό ιστό της Καδμείας, τα κτιριακά κατάλοιπα σε συνδυασμό με τα κεραμικά ευρήματα υποδεικνύουν τις θέσεις του διοικητικού κέντρου, στα Β της Καδμείας, της εύπορης συνοικίας της πόλης στα Δ της Καδμείας και τις πιθανές θέσεις εργαστηρίων κεραμικής, στο κέντρο της Καδμείας. 7.Έγιναν οι πρώτες παρατηρήσεις, και τέθηκαν οι βάσεις για την περαιτέρω έρευνα της τοπικής παραγωγής κεραμικής στη Θήβα. Παρατηρήθηκαν επτά κατηγορίες πηλών που απαντούν συχνότερα, οι οποίοι χρησιμοποιήθηκαν πιθανόν από τοπικό ή περιφερειακό εργαστήριο κεραμικής.
