Chlamydial psittacosis during pregnancy: A case report

Abstract: Avian strains of C psittaci can cause atypical pneumonia during pregnancy. Massive placental infection with impaired placental perfusion may ensue subsequently. Given the serious nature of the disease and the ineffectiveness of erythromycin treatment, administration of tetracyclines may be justified, despite the possible adverse fetal effects. With persistent disease, early delivery of the fetus may provide good maternal and fetal outcomes.

“…The radiographic findings usually show infiltrates in the lungs and breathing difficulties may develop (Gherman et al, 1995;Heddema et al, 2003;Kovacova et al, 2007;Soni et al, 1999;Verweij et al, 1995). In the first case, the family physician started an ineffective empiric therapy with amoxicillin; in the second case, no antibiotics were prescribed.…”

“…The course of chlamydiosis ranges from asymptomatic through mild symptoms to severe and systemic illness. Corollary complications such as endocarditis, myocarditis, hepatitis, arthritis, keratoconjunctivitis, encephalitis, renal disorders, and miscarriages in pregnant women are also reported (15,25,40,45). Tetracyclines (doxycycline and tetracycline) are the drugs of choice in psittacosis treatment, with macrolides, mainly erythromycin, as the alternative in individuals where use of tetracyclines is not recommended (children and pregnant women) (28,40).…”
