Chlamydia pneumoniae in central retinal artery occlusion

Abstract: ABSTRACT.Purpose: There is increasing evidence that the common respiratory human pathogen Chlamydia pneumoniae has a causative role in atherosclerosis. We investigated the association of this pathogen with acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). Patients and Methods: Sera of 14 consecutive patients with CRAO and of 14 age-and sex-matched control subjects were examined. Antibodies against chlamydial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and outer membrane proteins of C. pneumoniae were determined by an enzyme-linked … Show more

“…Furthermore, various studies employed different methods. Some trials that employed serologic methods have demonstrated a link between seropositivity to C. pneumoniae and an acute cerebrovascular accident (4-8), whereas others have not (9)(10)(11). Moreover, some studies have confi rmed the presence of C. pneumoniae in the atherosclerotic plaque by molecular genetic methods (13)(14)(15)(16)(17), but a considerable number of studies have not reported any association (18)(19)(20)(21).…”

“…The relationship between C. pneumoniae and stroke has not been confirmed by all trials; therefore, the data are controversial. Several serologic studies have established a link between seropositivity and acute cerebrovascular accident (4-8), while others have not demonstrated any association (9)(10)(11).…”

“…36 C. pneumoniae has been reported to be associated with ocular diseases such as optic neuritis, central retinal artery occlusion, acute anterior uveitis, and anterior optic neuropathy, which may be associated with vascular or inflammatory factors. [44][45][46][47][48][49] This mechanism may lead to vascular dysregulation and the reduction of ocular blood flow at the optic nerve head that may cause glaucomatous optic neuropathy without an IOP elevation.…”
