Chisel: a system for creating highly interactive screen layouts

Abstract: The UofA* User Interface Management System (U&IS) generates graphical user interfaces based on a high-level description of semantic commands supported by the application. A main part of the UIMS, called Chisel, generates the presentation component of interfaces. Chisel selects interaction techniques, determines their attributes, and places them on the screen of the display device. While doing so it is capable of considering device properties, end user's preferences, and interface designer's guidelines. The aim… Show more

“…The notation is useful both as a means of communicating the behaviour of the dialog layer to designers and as input for a compiler that outputs the interface source code. SINGH S. et al [16] on their side propose a user interface management system (Chisel) that generates graphical user interfaces based on a detailed description of the semantic commands supported by the application. Chisel selects the interaction techniques, determines their attributes and places them on the display device screen.…”

“…To solve this problem, some tools use automatic generation so that the tool makes many of these choices from a much higher-level specification. Many of these tools, including Mickey [74], Jade [114], Chisel [95], and DON [39] have concentrated on creating menus and dialog boxes. Chisel and Jade allow the designer to use a graphical editor to edit the generated interface if it is not good enough.…”

“…Recent work focuses on new layers for intelligent control over presentation style [7]. The UofA* UIMS [22] separates dialog control from interface style. Interface style is generated automatically.…”
