“…Erosive arthropathies include canine rheumatoid arthritis, 12 idiopathic erosive polyarthritis, 13, 14 and a breedspecific polyarthritis recognized in Greyhounds. 15,16 Nonerosive polyarthropathies have broadly been classified into types I-IV, 17 as outlined in Table 1, but also include SLE, polyarthritis/polymyositis syndrome, 18 polyarthritis/polymeningitis syndrome, 19 breed-specific polyarthropathies, such as those seen in Akitas 20 and Chinese Shar-Pei dogs, 21,22 drug-induced polyarthropathy, [23][24][25] and vaccine-induced polyarthropathy. 26 Tick-borne infectious diseases, especially ehrlichiosis (more commonly granulocytic than monocytic forms), Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Lyme disease, have also been implicated either as direct pathogens or by causing a reactive (type II) polyarthritis.…”

“…Affected Akitas show signs of the disease at a much earlier age, and the syndrome is heritable (Dougherty and Center, 1991). The mechanism of disease development has not been elucidated, but it shares several features with the inherited renal amyloidosis and recurrent fever of unknown origin syndrome of Chinese shar pei dogs (May et al, 1992;Rivas et al, 1993;Zeiss, 1994). This combination of symptoms is reminiscent of familial Mediterranean fever of humans, which has an autosomal recessive inheritance (Rivas et al, 1993).…”
