Background: Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is used widely to treat various diseases, including cancer. However, effective herb pairs for treating specific cancer types have so far not been identified. Here, we aimed to calculate the survival benefits of herb pairs by cluster analysis, association rules, and survival evaluation in patients with esophageal cancer (EC) treated with CHM. Patients and Methods: 59 patients with EC who received 176 prescriptions including 178 types of herbs were enrolled into the study. The herb pairs were identified by both cluster analysis and association rules. Overall survival (OS) was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: Eight groups of herb pairs were identified by cluster analysis, and 4 groups of herb pairs were identified by association rules. Of these, 3 groups of herb pairs were identified by both methods. OS estimation showed that the pair of chicken gizzard-membrane/Astragalus was associated with improved survival in patients with EC treated with CHM. Conclusion: Patients who received prescriptions containing the pair of chicken gizzard-membrane and Astragalus had improved OS compared with patients who received prescriptions lacking this pair.

In Korea, patients with stroke are commonly treated using traditional Korean medicine (TKM). The aim of this study was to provide information on the clinical characteristics of the pattern identification (PI) of stroke used in TKM. Stroke patients admitted to 15 TKM university hospitals from April 2005 through December 2013 were evaluated. The measured variables included the following factors as they related to the PI: (a) stroke etiology; (b) distribution of symptoms/signs; (c) physical characteristics and lifestyle parameters; (d) medical history; and (e) stroke-related laboratory results. Among 4912 stroke patients, 3466 patients received the same PI by two experts with the following distribution: Qi-Deficiency pattern (n = 810), Fire-Heat (FH) pattern (n = 1031), Dampness-Phlegm (DP) pattern (n = 1127), and Yin-Deficiency pattern (n = 498). Approximately 89.9% of subjects enrolled in this study had cerebral infarction. Some of specific symptoms were related to each type of PI, and obese phenotypes and blood lipids were significantly related to DP and FH. These results showed the characteristics of each type of PI and should lead to the standardization of diagnosis for stroke in TKM.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide with a high mortality, and still there are only few effective methods to treat it. To this end, alternative medicines from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are being investigated for their ability to eliminate the tumor or halt its progression. A large number of studies have shown that TCM can be an effective approach to treat the HCC in clinical trials when used alone or in combination with other therapies. Thus, TCM has made significant progress, and has begun to gain worldwide popularity for promoting healthcare and HCC treatment. Because of this progress, periodic summaries are needed to facilitate further research for the use of TCM to treat HCC. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of this work with regard to the following aspects: herbalist views on the etiology and therapeutic principles for treatment of HCC, treating HCC by TCM alone, treating HCC with TCM in combination with resection, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and interventional therapy, and other therapies. Additionally, the current main problems and future application prospects for treatment of HCC by TCM described, which could provide scientific guidance for clinician as well as references for the treatment of other cancers.
