Audiovisual integration (AVI), the process of combining visual and auditory stimuli into a cohesive perceptual experience, is crucial in multisensory perception. The present study delves into the impact of non-spatial inhibition of return (IOR) on AVI, utilizing the high-resolution event-related potential (ERP) technique within a prime-neutral cue-target paradigm. We specifically examined the neural underpinnings of AVI disparities in the context of valid and invalid targets. Our behavioral analysis revealed a notable diminution of AVI in cases involving valid targets, with a pronounced effect in trials featuring Chinese character primes. Intriguingly, ERP results demonstrated substantial AVI within the N400 and P300 components. The study's novelty lies in identifying the P300 component as the primary neural correlate for the attenuation of AVI due to non-spatial IOR, a finding not replicated with color block primes. These insights not only corroborate the late attention theory and the co-activation model but also substantiate the context-updating hypothesis. Overall, our research provides novel ERP evidence elucidating the mechanisms by which non-spatial IOR modulates AVI, thereby contributing significantly to the broader understanding of the cognitive processes underlying multisensory perception and attentional dynamics.

BackgroundPersonal narratives play an essential role in children's social and academic development. However, children with Down syndrome have ongoing challenges with constructing and communicating personal narratives.MethodsUsing a single‐case multiple‐probe across participants design, we examined whether a targeted intervention could improve both micro‐ and macro‐structural aspects of personal narratives from Chinese adolescents with Down syndrome.ResultsAll three participants demonstrated high treatment effects in two macrostructural narrative outcomes (i.e., narrative element complexity and narrative coherence) in response to the intervention and moderate to high treatment effects in the microstructural narrative outcomes (i.e., the mean length of utterance in words and the number of different words). However, all participants demonstrated limited improvements in narrative cohesion. These effects were maintained and generalised in a different narrative condition.ConclusionsThe preliminary findings support the feasibility and effectiveness of the personal narrative intervention incorporated with self‐monitoring strategies for adolescents with Down syndrome.
