Introducción. Las escalas de esfuerzo percibido cuantifican la sensación causada por los cambios metabólicos durante el ejercicio. Debido a su inmadurez cognitiva, los niños necesitan instrumentos adaptados, motivo por el cual se desarrolló la escala de medición de esfuerzo percibido infantil, EPInfant. Objetivo. Determinar la validez y confiabilidad de la escala EPInfant durante una prueba de ejercicio de intensidad gradualmente creciente. Materiales y métodos. Se hizo un estudio de corte transversal. Se seleccionaron niños de dos grupos de edad por categoría de desarrollo cognitivo: de 8 a 12 años (operaciones concretas) y de 13 a 15 años (inteligencia formal). Todos respondieron el test de Chester y se registraron su frecuencia cardiaca, la carga de trabajo y el esfuerzo percibido durante la prueba. Los coeficientes r de Pearson y de correlación intraclase se emplearon para determinar la validez y la confiabilidad. Resultados. De 75 niños participantes, 35 (18 hombres) se clasificaron en el grupo de operaciones concretas y 40 (20 hombres) en el de inteligencia formal. En los cuatro grupos la frecuencia cardiaca y el esfuerzo percibido se incrementaron durante la prueba (p<0,0001). El esfuerzo percibido se correlacionó con la frecuencia cardiaca en los grupos de operaciones concretas e inteligencia formal en hombres y mujeres: r=0,73, r=0,58, r=0,43 y r=0,62, respectivamente (p<0,0001). Los modelos de regresión fueron significativos en los cuatro grupos. En el subgrupo perteneciente a la etapa de operaciones concretas, el coeficiente de correlación intraclase fue de 0,88 (0,82-0,92) en hombres y de 0,94 (0,91-0,96) en mujeres. Conclusión. Rating scales of perceived exertion (PE) have been used to measure PE during exercise in the adult population with successful results. However, in children, it is necessary to develop adapted instruments due to their cognitive immaturity. The number of Spanish-language validated instruments for the pediatric population is scarce. Our objective was to develop a new PE rating scale. Research design was divided into three stages: development, content validity, and criterion validity. For development, a panel of five expert members was summoned, who provided indications for the new instrument. A systematic review of the literature to identify other validated instruments was performed. This process resulted in the development of the new EPInfant scale to measure PE, which integrates the expert panel's indications and the result of the literature systematic review. The evaluation of its content showed a high level of agreement regarding the quality of its design; the content validity index was 1. During the field assessment, a high concurrent criterion validity was observed in healthy adolescents due to the strong correlation shown between PE and heart rate in both boys and girls. The methodology used to develop the EPInfant scale aimed at reducing potential biases that may hinder its psychometric properties. Preliminary results suggest that this may be a validated instrument that could be implemented in healthy adolescents.

Physical activity recall questionnaires are important tools to quantify physical activity patterns and relating these patterns to disease risk. However, of the movement components that comprise physical activity, intensity is the most difficult to directly and objectively measure. PURPOSE:The present investigation examined the validity of a post-event recall questionnaire to measure the perception of physical exertion during a circuit exercise program. METHODS: Forty (21.1 ±2.7 yrs) recreationally active females (n=22) and males (n=18), with no prior knowledge of OMNI RPE, underwent a circuit program consisting of in counterbalanced order: (I) cycle ergometry at 50% and 75% VO 2peak , and (II) bicep curls at 65% and 90% 1-RM. Seven days later, subjects rated their perceived exertion associated with each exercise bout using the Exertional Recall Questionnaire. The subjects reported OMNI RPEs for the overall body (O), legs (L), and chest/breathing (C) for the cycle exercises, and OMNI RPEs for the overall body (O) and arm (A) for the bicep curl exercises. Following completion of the Exertional Recall Questionnaire, subjects were given standardized instructions for the OMNI RPE Cycle and Resistance Scales and repeated the circuit program. OMNI RPEs were then measured during the exercise bouts (the Criterion). RESULTS: Three-factor analyses of variance indicated that Recall and Criterion RPE-O, and -L did not differ significantly at both cycle exercise intensities (p=0.064 and 0.169). Recall RPE-C was significantly lower than Criterion RPE-C at both cycle iii exercise intensities (p=0.010). Three-factor analyses of variance indicated that the RPE-O and -A for the Recall procedure were significantly less than the Criterion procedure (p<0.001) for both the lighter and heavier resistances. CONCLUSIONS: Recreationally active females and males with no prior knowledge of OMNI RPE were able to recall their perceived exertion (overall body and legs) experienced during non-weight bearing (cycle) aerobic exercise performed seven days previously. The Recall procedure is valid for non-weight bearing aerobic exercise. However, subjects under-estimated Recall RPE-O and -A for upper body resistance exercise. These responses question validity of the Recall RPE procedure for single joint arm resistance exercise.iv
