Children's Concepts of Average and Representativeness

Abstract: Whenever the need arises to describe a set of data in a succinct way, the issue of mathematical representativeness arises. The goal of this research is to understand the characteristics of fourth through eighth graders' constructions of “average” as a representative number summarizing a data set. Twenty-one students were interviewed, using a series of open-ended problems that called on children to construct their own notion of representativeness. Five basic constructions of representativeness are identified an… Show more

“…However, from a statistical view, understanding how the average is used as a statistic to describe the population is difficult for students. Many pieces of research have revealed average as difficult for students (Rubin et al, 1991;Mokros and Russell, 1995;Bright and Friel, 1998;Shaughnessy, 2007;Kaplan et al, 2010). This research also proves this finding.…”

“…However, players may lack statistical knowledge that could be applied to the process of team selection. Many people find it difficult to understand how variability in data can be expressed through means and standard deviations (Mokros & Russell, 1995;Pollatsek et al, 1981). Misconceptions about the probabilistic laws of chance and randomness may also lead people to perceive patterns in independent sequences (e.g., hitting multiple shots in basketball) that do not truly exist (Gilovich et al, 1985).…”
