The field/topic of children in the Hebrew Bible has received growing attention in the past few years. Just the amount of monograph length studies in this short period of time shows the developing interest. This brief essay explores some origins and backgrounds of how the topic emerged, proposes its two major current forms, discusses some current debates in the field, and then extracts interpretive fruits from this field that might benefit Hebrew Bible studies in general and perhaps even inform some related disciplines. It also suggests some ways the field may move forward and what to watch out for from this field in the coming years. Given the amount done on this topic in recent years, the essay primarily focuses on monograph length studies but informs readers of annotated bibliographies that contain relevant articles.

This article traces the rise of research on children in the Hebrew Bible (HB). While early contributions to the field provided foundational insights, this area of scholarship has gained significant ground over the last ten years. This article begins by reviewing seminal points for studying children in the HB. I explain why this study is critical for our understanding of the Bible, and clarify how we discern who is a child in the text and the ancient world. Since the word ‘childist’ is still new to many in the academy, I discuss the origin of this term, define it, and urge its adoption. Most of the article assesses scholarship on children in the HB, with an emphasis on publications that have emerged recently as well as works forthcoming (at the time of publication). The conclusion sketches some of the many areas in this scholarly field that are ripe for further exploration.

“…The field's genesis can arguably be traced to 2008 with the first meeting of the Children in the Biblical World section of the Society of Biblical Literature and the publication of The Child in the Bible (Bunge et al, 2008). With a few notable exceptions (Cooper, 1996; Fewell, 2003; Gundry‐Volf, 2001), prior scholarship on the Bible and children had been largely subsumed under the wider topic of families or related issues (for annotated bibliographies see Aasgaard, 2018; Parker, 2016; more broadly, Vuolanto et al, 2018). This article strengthens the relationship between childhood studies and biblical studies by introducing the field of childist biblical criticism to other child‐focused disciplines. A brief overview explains why studying children in the Bible is critical for understanding this ancient text and its world. Most of the article focuses on the tools used for gathering evidence and the methodologies used in childist scholarship. Discussion of the terms ‘childist’ and ‘childism’ then urges adoption of both terms as conveying positive meaning. Throughout the discussion and explicitly in the conclusion, this article shows what childist biblical studies contribute to the wider movement of childism and securing children's rights.
