“…The majority of cross-sectional or retrospective studies examining PTSD-alcohol misuse in women largely support the premise that there are significant associations between the severity of PTSD symptoms and alcohol misuse. This finding was documented in a variety of populations, including female Veterans (Dobie et al, 2004;Lehavot, Browne, et al, 2014;Nunnink et al, 2010;Ouimette, Wolfe, & Chrestman, 1996;Scott et al, 2013), treatment-seeking substance users (Heffner et al, 2011;Sonne, Back, Zuniga, Randall, & Brady, 2003), non-treatment-seeking substance users (Johnson, Striley, & Cottler, 2006;Stewart, Conrod, Pihl, & Dongier, 1999), and college and community samples (Acierno, Resnick, Kilpatrick, Saunders, & Best, 1999;Bedard-Gilligan, Cronce, Lehavot, Blayney, & Kaysen, 2014;Cross, Crow, Powers, & Bradley, 2015;Epstein, Saunders, Kilpatrick, & Resnick, 1998;Jaquier, Flanagan, & Sullivan, 2015;Kachadourian, Pilver, & Potenza, 2014;Kessler et al, 1995;Sartor et al, 2010;Stappenbeck, Bedard-Gilligan, Lee, & Kaysen, 2013;Sullivan, Ashare, Jaquier, & Tennen, 2012;Timko et al, 2008;Ullman et al, 2009;Watt et al, 2012).…”

“…First, the majority of the studies that examine the associations between childhood and adolescent adversity and substance use disorder or health outcomes are limited by cross-sectional designs. Most studies either lack dating of onset of substance use disorder or health outcomes to ensure temporal precedence of the adverse events or include periods in which the adverse events and outcomes of interest overlap temporally (e.g., Cross et al 2015; Goodwin and Stein 2004; Grella et al 2005; Khoury et al 2010; Springer et al 2007; Triffleman et al 1995). Prospective studies are needed to strengthen our understanding of the risks conferred by childhood and adolescent adversity.…”
