Childhood maltreatment and obesity: systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Obesity is a prevalent global-health problem associated with substantial morbidity, impairment and economic burden. Because most readily available forms of treatment are ineffective in the long term, it is essential to advance knowledge of obesity prevention by identifying potentially modifiable risk factors. Findings from experimental studies in non-human primates suggest that adverse childhood experiences may influence obesity risk. However, observations from human studies showed heterogeneous results. To ad… Show more

“…A growing literature shows that poly-victimization (exposure to more than one type of victimization) further increases the risk of several psychiatric disorders and symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, suicide ideation, and self-harm (34,(43)(44)(45)(46)(47). It has also been shown that increasing numbers of childhood adversities are associated with more complex adult psychopathology, including more DSM-IV diagnoses and the coexistence of internalizing and externalizing disorders (48).…”

“…One aspect poly-victimization has gained broad support in research and has been shown to be significant in several different populations. Poly-victimization occurs when the individual is exposed to several different types of victimization and has been repeatedly confirmed as an important factor (34,43,46,49,83,152). Different types and numbers of types of victimization have been studied, and the main results are robust and reproduced.…”

“…Thus, several longitudinal studies (Johnson, Cohen, Kasen, & Brook, 2002; Noll, Zeller, Trickett, & Putnam, 2007; Thomas, Hypponen, & Power, 2008) and a meta-analysis (Danese & Tan, 2014) pointed towards an increased risk for obesity in adulthood if any childhood trauma had occurred. Furthermore, higher risks for cardiovascular disease (Doom, Mason, Suglia, & Clark, 2017) and hypertension (Suglia, Clark, Boynton-Jarrett, Kressin, & Koenen, 2014) after child maltreatment were reported in longitudinal assessments.…”

“…The link between childhood trauma and inflammation may help us understand the enduring effects of childhood trauma on later mental and physical health (Agnew-Blais & Danese, 2016; Danese & Tan, 2013; Nanni, Uher, & Danese, 2012). Inflammation can affect the risk for psychopathology by altering the metabolism of key neurotransmitters including monoamines and glutamate; in addition, when acting in early life, inflammation can also impact on brain development and influence the reactivity of the HPA axis and microglia to later stressors (Danese & Lewis, 2017).…”
