Child and Family Factors Associated with Referral to Child Psychiatrists

Abstract: We compared children aged 7-12 years referred to child psychiatrists by general practitioners (GPs) with community control children matched for the presence of psychiatric disorder. Referral status in psychiatrically disturbed children was linked to male sex, severity of the disorder, mental problems in the mothers, high levels of psychosocial stress in the family, and less support from extended families. “…Using the cutoffs of two and seven for skewness and kurtosis, respectively (West, Finch, & Curran, 1995), all the cultural orientation and adjustment variables were normally distributed, with the exception of teachers' reports of children's externalizing problems, which was slightly positively skewed. Because the severity of clinically significant behavioral problems is typically low in community-or school-based samples (Garralda & Bailey, 1988), it is not surprising that some measures of behavioral problems are positively This article is intended solely for the personal use of the individual user and is not to be disseminated broadly.…”

“…The latest health service reorganisation (Department of Health, 1997) has made primary care groups or trusts^which original papers Foreman General practitioners and child and adolescent psychiatry CATALAN, J., MARSACK, P., HAWTON, K. E., et al (1980) include general practitioners (GPs)^the sole commissioners for local services. Previous studies on the relationship between GPs and CAMHS have examined GP referrals and found them broadly appropriate (Garralda & Bailey, 1988), but some studies suggest GPs' understanding of CAMHS may be too limited for a commissioning role (Bailey & Garralda, 1989;Evans & Brown, 1993). Although the knowledge that a GP should possess in order to commission services has never been defined (Simpson, 2000), it seems uncontentious to assert that commissioning GPs should have good awareness of CAMHS.…”

“…Naturally, more serious symptoms are more likely to get a child to mental health services (Bums et al, 1995;Garralda & Bailey, 1988), a finding confirmed even among the few studies ofjuvenile crime victims (Horowi~z et al, 1997;Oates et al, 1994;Sauzier, 1989). More serious victimization episodes (e.g., sexual assault involving penetration or a family perpetrator), independent of symptoms, are also more likely to warrant treatment.…”
