Chicken type II collagen induced immune balance of main subtype of helper T cells in mesenteric lymph node lymphocytes in rats with collagen-induced arthritis

Abstract: These results indicate that oral administration of CCII had therapeutic effects on CIA rats, which was related to decreased production of pro-inflammatory mediators (IL-2, IL-17) and increased production of anti-inflammatory mediators (IL-4, TGF-beta). This suggests that CCII plays an important role in regulating the immune balance of Th1/Th2 and Th17/Treg in rats with CIA.

“…Then, 5-μm slices were prepared and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. 2 The joint sections were graded for disease severity using a scoring system from 0 to 4: 3132 grade 0, normal ankle joint; grade 1, normal synovium with few mononuclear cells; grade 2, a few layers of flat to rounded synovial lining cells and dense infiltration with mononuclear cells; grade 3, hyperplasia of the synovium with mononuclear cells infiltration; and grade 4, severe synovitis with pannus and articular cartilage destruction.…”

“…The severity of arthritis in the joints was graded from 0 to 4 according to the intensity of the lining layer hyperplasia, mononuclear cell infiltration, and pannus formation. Grade 0, normal ankle joint; grade 1, normal synovium with occasional mononuclear cells; grade 2, definite arthritis with a few layers of flat to rounded synovial lining cells containing scattered mononuclear cells; grade 3, clear hyperplasia of the synovium with three or more [29] . Five compartments were evaluated in the spleen: cellularity of the periarteriolar lymphoid sheath (PALS), lymphoid follicles, marginal zone, and red pulp and the total number of germinal centers (GCs) in each section.…”

“…These results suggested that CCII played an important role in regulating immune balance of Th1/Th2 and Th17/Treg in rats with CIA [12,13]. The literature also confirmed that by regulating the activity of the abovedescribed effect T-cells, Treg cells present are the main players in immune tolerance [14].…”
