Cherenkov radiation generated by a beam of electrons revisited

Abstract: Cherenkov radiation generated by a beam of electrons is theoretically investigated. In the case that the boundary effect is negligible, coherent Cherenkov radiation does not depend on the longitudinal bunch form of the electron beam, which is remarkably different from other kinds of coherent radiation like coherent transition radiation and coherent synchrotron radiation. The reason for this result is ascribed to the criterion of the emission of Cherenkov radiation. The angular distribution of coherent Cherenko… Show more

“…The first background could be transition radiation (TR) due to the transition from air to the ice target, which have been significant in previous experiments [10]. We would also expect significant TR in this experiment based on the short track length in the ice block compared to the frequencies of interest [11]. The second background would be radiation due to a sudden appearance of the electron beam, similar to the expected coherent radio emission from the cosmic ray air shower sudden death [12].…”

“…Several kinds of coherent radiation have been investigated, such as coherent synchrotron radiation and coherent transition radiation [1][2][3][4][5]. It is well known that operation of a plasma microwave oscillator is based on theČerenkov interaction of a high current relativistic electron beam (REB) with slow eigen-mode of a plasma waveguide [6][7][8]. On the other hand significant attention was paid to the development of plasma sources and investigations of properties of the produced plasma in relativistic plasma microwave electronics [9].…”
