Chemotherapy‐associated changes in 31P MRS spectra of sera from patients with multiple myeloma

Abstract: 31P NMR spectra were obtained from sera of 22 healthy volunteers and 20 patients with multiple myeloma at the time of diagnosis and repeated up to five times during therapy. All spectra consisted of a Pi peak (used as a reference peak) and two peaks from phospholipids (PL): one peak due to phosphatidylethanolamine and sphingomyelin (PE + SM) and a second peak due to phosphatidylcholine (PC). Prior to therapy, peak intensities of the phospholipids were low relative to Pi. During therapy leading to remission, th… Show more

“…Alterations in blood lipid metabolism have been found in patients with thyroid [24] and other cancers [25,26]. The significant increase in the serum lipid concentration and concomitant decrease in the PCho/choline concentration we observed in RCC patients are consistent with those reported in an earlier study of RCC tissue [17].…”

“…It has become the most prevalent malignancy of the kidney and accounts for about 3% of all adult cancers in western countries [1,2]. A favorable prognosis (95% at 5 years) can be obtained by radical nephrectomy with [26]. b The average age (mean ± S.D.…”

“…In a study involving 43 patients with multiple myeloma, Hachem et al [15] demonstrated a decrease in HDL-C, LDL-C and TC levels compared to the control group. Kuliszkiewicz-Janus et al [16] observed a significant decrease on HDL-C, LDL-C and TC cholesterol concentrations in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, which seemed to normalize in the remission period. In this study, however, the changes in the lipid fractions in these patients were less pronounced and limited to the HDL-C level.…”

“…Correlation between the concentrations of lipids and lipoprotein concentrations and intensities of PL in the NMR spectra were assessed by calculating the correlation coefficient. (13) and our own studies (14,15) have shown the 31P MRS spectra of normal sera to consist of three peaks: a downfield peak due to inorganic phosphate and two additional upfield peaks (Figs. l a and Ib).…”
