Chemoarchitecture of area prostriata in adult and developing mice: Comparison with presubiculum and parasubiculum

Abstract: Retrosplenial area 29e, which was a cortical region described mostly in earlier rodent literature, is often included in the dorsal presubiculum (PrSd) or postsubiculum (PoS) in modern literature and commonly used brain atlases. Recent anatomical and molecular studies have revealed that retrosplenial area 29e belongs to the superficial layers of area prostriata, which in primates is found to be important in fast analysis of quickly moving objects in far peripheral visual field. As in primates, the prostriata in… Show more

“…In sharp contrast, the injection in the PrS-PoS of the Slc17a6-Cre mouse produced strong terminal labeling in full extent of the BSTsc (e.g., Figure 11). It is worth mentioning that area prostriata (Pro) in the rat and mouse (Chen et al, 2022;Lu et al, 2020) is also directly innervated by subcortical visual structures such as the DLG, which also receives direct inputs from the retina (Chen et al, 2021).…”

“…In this study, we used the neurotoxin ibotenic acid to damage neurons in the prostriata. The lesion caused by single injection covers most of the prostriata ( Figures 2C–F ) since the prostriata in rodents is small in size ( Lu et al, 2020 ; Chen et al, 2022 ). Our results showed that the movement speeds of the rats in the control, sham and experimental groups did not show significant changes, so there was no significant difference in the movement ability among the three groups.…”

“…These subcomponents appear to be specifically involved in peripheral and central visual-field representations. The functional retinotopic parcellation of AP is supported by eccentricity, myelin and CT gradients, as well as by gene expression studies [ 8 ].…”

“…AP outputs are multisensory and high-order association cortical areas (e.g., V1, the contralateral AP, and the temporal, parietal, anterior cingulate, orbitofrontal, and frontopolar cortices) and subcortical regions linked to the visuomotor function and visuospatial abilities (e.g., the subiculum, pulvinar, ventral lateral geniculate nucleus, lateral dorsal thalamic nucleus, zona incerta, and the pontine and pretectal nuclei) [ 4 , 7 , 8 ]. Visuospatial abilities and the visuomotor function are at the root of TR [ 5 , 9 ].…”
