Chemo-physical analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of moisture susceptibility of nano hydrated lime modified asphalt mixtures

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the moisture susceptibility of nano hydrated lime (NHL) modified asphalt mixtures and determine the fundamental factors of moisture damage in asphalt mixtures using the molecular dynamics (MD), as well as analyze the effect that the aging of asphalt binders has on the moisture damage in asphalt mixtures. The NHL was added to the control asphalt to make NHL modified asphalt. The modified asphalt was mixed with aggregates to form NHL modified asphalt mixtures. The tens… Show more

“…As an example, nHL was prepared by adding NaOH to CaCl 2 ·2H 2 O under vigorous stirring, washing with water, drying, and then grounding in a mortar machine [37]. Regardless to the preparation technique, the few available papers, mainly focalize on the moisture susceptibility of nHL-modified bituminous mixtures and on the effect that aging has on the moisture damage [38,39]. The results indicate that both dry and wet cohesive bonds of the modified binders increase while decreasing the filler particle size.…”

“…ese modifiers enhance the durability and sustainability of pavements by improving high-and low-temperature performance. Flexible pavement performance can be enhanced through change in aggregate gradation and/or source [3,4], modification of binder through polymers [5], styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) [6,7], crumb rubber [8,9], Elvaloy [10], polyethylene [11][12][13], lime [14][15][16][17], and costly nanomaterials [18,19]. Poly phosphoric acid (PPA) has been extensively used as bitumen modifier and has been reported to improve highand intermediate-temperature performance of asphalt [20].…”
