Chemistry Is in the News: Assessment of Student Attitudes toward Authentic News Media-Based Learning Activities

Abstract: MethodAssessment of CIITN activities was carried out in the winter semester of 1999 in an organic chemistry course at the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU). This course is the first part of a two-semester sequence of sophomore-level chemistry instruction for science majors (3 lectures per week, 16 weeks, 184 students completed). Students were assigned to read approximately one news portfolio per week and, at the

“…These students have significant demands on their time aside from their course work and, consequently, scheduling time for group work is a substantial challenge for everyone in the course. The findings of the correlations between work hours and lower portfolio scores for the group as well as previous findings, in which students complained that scheduling was a significant problem with group work (Hume et al 2006), supports these findings. Therefore, positive responses about group experience at the end of the semester are even more persuasive because these students are not easily able to accommodate group activities in their schedules.…”

“…Chemistry Is in the News (CIITN) is a curriculum that has been in development and implemented since 1997 (Glaser 2003;Glaser and Carson 2005;Glaser and Poole 1999;Hume et al 2006). In the winter semester of 2004, CIITN was employed in the first semester of a two-semester organic chemistry course sequence for science majors at the University of Missouri, Columbia.…”

“…Although textbooks provide many real‐world applications of these areas of chemistry, I am always struggling to incorporate into the course various health‐related topics covered in the news and various media outlets. There have been previous efforts to effectively use the news to highlight and teach chemistry [12]. However, the approach I adopted was to take given topics covered in the course and find news clips to support discussion of these topics.…”

“…To reach this goal, we have developed a systematic teaching approach (Glaser, 2003;Glaser & Carson, in press;Glaser & Poole, 1999;Hume, Carson, Hodgen, & Glaser, 2004). This teaching innovation involves six levels to guide instructors in the stepwise implementation in their classes.…”
