ChemInform Abstract: Synthesis of Some Esters by the Reactions of 1,4‐Dichloro‐ and 1,4‐Dibromo‐2‐methylbut‐2‐ene with Carboxylic Acids.

Abstract: ChemInform Abstract A 1:2 molar mixture of the 1,4-dihalo-2-methylbutenes (I) and the potassium alkanoates (II) reacts to produce the diesters (III) in good yields. The potassium salts (II) are dissolved in the corresponding acids prior to starting the reactions. The diesters (III), e.g. (IIIb) may be applied as softeners. A comparison of (IIIb) with the softeners dibutyl phthalate and dibutyl sebacinate reveals that at least the ester (IIIb) may replace the expensive dibutyl compounds as softener.
