ChemInform Abstract: Reaction of Osmium Tetroxide with Chalcogen Halides: Chalcogeno‐halo Complexes of Osmium.

Abstract: ChemInform Abstract Reactions between OsO4 and ECl2 (E: S, Se, Te) afford the known compounds OsCl4•(ECl4)2, independent of the molar ratios of the reactants. These compounds are characterized by their IR spectra. Reactions between OsO4 (I) and S2Cl2 (II), SnCl2 (V) (prepared by dissolving S in S2Cl2 (II)), and S2Br2 (VIII) afford the novel compounds (III), (VI) and (IX). OsBr4 (X) reacts with Se (XI) and excess Br2 (XII) to yield the novel OsBr4•(SeBr4)2 (XIII). All of these novel compounds are chracterized b… Show more

“…Their compositions and structures depend on the con ditions of the synthesis and the chlorine to chalcogen ratio in the reaction mixture. While the documented ternary osmium complexes with sulfur (selenium) and chlorine are few (OsS 2 Cl 12 and OsSe 2 Cl 12 [1] as the cation-anion complexes [OsCl 6 ] 2--2[:ChalCl 3 ] + ; OsS 4 Cl 2 [2] with an unclear structure), the number of quaternary complexes of the system Os-S-Se-Cl is substantially higher. For instance, the complex Os 4 S 11 SeCl 8 [3] is known to exist as the 1D polymer [Os 2 Cl 4 (μ S 2 )(μ S(S,Se)) 2 ] n , which is simultaneously a cluster containing a metal-metal bond and a molec ular complex with polychalcogenide groups.…”
